I was surfing and found epitonic.com today. Lots of great artists here and I highly recommend it. Go to Strange Attractor's Audio House for some interesting ambient like audio from a community radio station in Olympia Washington.

Just got this link in my inbox - They Might Be Giants - Only three free songs here but their website is really interesting to say the least.

Alternative Tentacles has been around for a long time! Check this page out for lots of great MP3's including Jello Biafra, Pansy Division, Wesley Willis and LOTS more. Seventeen pages each with samples/full albums from five different artists/albums.

NoRecordLabel is an interesting site that I stumbled on today. All unsigned bands, many average, many below average, and many above average. I guess I would call it a good mix. What it may lack in quality it definitely makes up for in spirit.
Sub Pop Records, remember them? Probably most well known as the label that found Nirvana. Grunge may be dead but this label continually impresses me with their ability to find new talent - apparently I am not alone as I do believe they have a deal with a major to help discover 'talent.'

Go to their MP3 page and start listening. To save the MP3's you have to wait until they load and then go to the File/Save Page in your web browser.
Go-Kart Records has been making a few waves lately (a great publicity stunt if nothing else) by making it well known that they don't agree with the RIAA and most of the rest of the music industry - "We at Go-Kart Records want to make it perfectly clear that the RIAA does not represent the views of all record labels."

They may not be a 'major' label but they are pretty big in their own right. Mostly punk but there are lots of FREE mp3's to check out here. If you like their music, they sell a double cd set of mp3's too!

Venke Fuzz - girl power punk rock with Norwegian attitude. Six really short songs by two librarians and three other women. Imagine having one of these ladies as your librarian when you were a kid!
I just found this really cool website devoted to garage rock files in mp3 format, aptly titled Garage Rock Songs in MP3 format. I am not sure if these are %100 legal but they are almost all obscure bands that probably wouldn't care anyway.

35007 - Their official link seems to be down right now but I originally found this band through the Psychedlic Music Net anyway so I used their link. This is some hardcore psychedlic stuff which means you will probably not like it if you don't like psychedlic music. Of the two songs, Cosmic Messenger is my favorite.
Your Team Ring - There are only three free mp3's at their website but they are all fairly interesting. I highly recommend The Problem With the Fourth Dimension, a very interesting blend of lively sounds. Saturday Morning Preview is quite a bit more 'experimental' and if you have a slow internet connection and don't like this kind of stuff you may want to take a pass.

Ok, I have done the 'obvious' for the past few days so I may as well do it once more. MP3.com has been there since the beginning, or at least close to it. You can't download everything that you want but you can make up your own playlists and stream all of the music that you wish if it is not downloadable. A music fan could easily spend the rest of their mortal life exploring this site.

Feableweiner - alterna-pop

Simply-Lost - alterna-pop

Standstill - 'alternative'
